What is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup, also known as permanent cosmetics, cosmetic tattooing and micropigmentation is the application of pigment into the dermal layer of skin in order to achieve the look of makeup. Permanent Makeup is indeed a form of tattoo. Looks that can be reproduced include eyeliner or eyelash enhancements, eyebrows, lip liner or lip shading.
Is Permanent Makeup really Permanent?
Permanent makeup should be considered a permanent procedure. That being said, you will have some fading after your initial application from your skin's natural exfoliation process. Additionally, you may experience gradual fading over time. It is easy to add color but difficult to take it away so I suggest starting off conservatively until your desired look is achieved. A color refresher every few years is suggested.
How long will my Permanent Makeup last?
Permanent makeup is long lasting, however there are many factors that can affect how long your makeup lasts. Sun exposure, medications and illnesses, smoking, skin treatments and skin care products containing AHA's, BHA's and retinoids and the skin's natural exfoliation process can lead to fading. Many people like to come in for a color refresher every couple of years.
Good reasons to consider Permanent Makeup:
*You desire a little more time in the morning and love the convenience of waking up with your makeup already on!
*You've lost lash or brow hair as a result of over-tweezing, aging, alopecia, chemotherapy or trichotillomania (pulling of hair including brows and lashes).
*You have vision problems, suffer from arthritis, shaking hands or other conditions that make it difficult for you to apply.
*You suffer from allergies to traditional makeup, seasonal or other allergies that cause watery eyes.
*You have difficulty applying traditional makeup correctly.
*You are involved in outdoor activities or sports and struggle with traditional makeup smudging, smearing and running.
*You just want the 24/7 convenience of Permanent Makeup expertly applied!
What does it feel like?
Some describe it as a slight prickly sensation. Most experience no discomfort at all and agree it is far more comfortable than anticipated. Topical anesthetics are used.
How is permanent makeup applied?
At Cat's Eye...Authentic Beauty & Skin Care, I use a method of applying the pigments that has been used for centuries. It is sometimes referred to as the manual soft touch method. I prefer this method of micropigmentation over machines or tattoo guns. It is more gentle, less invasive and I have far more control placing the ink exactly where I want it to go. No mistakes or mishaps, less discomfort.
Is there swelling? When can I go back to work? How long is the healing?
There may be minor swelling lasting only a few hours. More sensitive skin types may require 24-48 hours. You should be able to return to work immediately. The healing process requires a full week of application of Vaseline or A&D ointment. You should not get permanent makeup within 10 days prior to any special event where photos will be taken. Shiny eyebrows just look silly in photos! In a maximum of three weeks you'll be healed with your final color and shape.
What if I have plastic or laser surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is desirable for many reasons as we age. It's best to complete your surgery before having your makeup applied. Laser surgery or resurfacing may result in color loss or darkening of your makeup depending on the laser and the colors in your skin. If you already have permanent makeup and plan to have laser surgery, advise your laser so that he or she can perform a "spot test" before they proceed. If either cosmetic surgery or laser causes color loss, then it is a simple matter to have the color replaced.
What if I need an MRI, I heard permanent makeup can cause problems?
By all means get the needed MRI. Cat's Eye...Authentic Beauty & Skin Care uses only pigments that are all vegetable based with no iron oxide. This type of pigment will not interfere with MRI's.
What type of Pigments/Inks do you use?
Cat's Eye...Authentic Beauty & Skin Care uses only pigments that are organic/vegetable based with no iron oxide. Iron oxide pigments can turn blue or orange and also may leave permanent stains on the skin after the pigment has faded. This stain will never go away. Color correction is very expensive and harder to do than doing it right the first time. We make it our policy to do it right the first time.
Is Permanent Makeup Safe? What are the risks?
All clients are carefully screened to reduce the risk of contra-indications. Cat's Eye...Authentic Beauty & Skin Care uses organic/vegetable based pigments to reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Some Permanent Makeup technicians keep and reuse needles for each customer. The risks include: Dissatisfaction, asymmetry, allergic reaction and infection. At Cat's, single-use, sterile needles are used only once and disposed of immediately. Allergic reactions are rare and infections are almost unheard of. Cat always engages thoroughly with clients to reduce or avoid the possibility of dissatisfaction.
What should I expect afterward?
You will be given an aftercare sheet with full details and instructions. For at least one week Vaseline or A&D ointment applied to the new makeup is required. It is best if you do not tan or submerse during swimming for at least a month. At first, the application will look bold and bright but after a few weeks the old epidermis has been replaced with new translucent cells so the permanent makeup will look softer and subtler...natural. Eyeliner which may have looked like liquid liner when you left the office will look like a soft kohl pencil because you are seeing the color through diffusing layers of skin cells. Lip color which was at first bright will be a delicate blush and brows which looked hard should be much softer looking. This natural process makes your permanent cosmetic enhancement look soft and natural.
Strict sanitation and sterilization procedures are followed in accordance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. Only single-use, sterile needles are used with each application and disposed of immediately.
